Imprimeur-libraire ; journaliste et écrivain. - Natif de Liverpool. D'abord ouvrier imprimeur (1759). Établi imprimeur-libraire à Londres à l'automne 1763. Journaliste, pamphlétaire, auteur de nombreux ouvrages littéraires, historiques et politiques, dont certains sous les pseudonymes : "English Freeholder" et "Independent Whig". Se retire des affaires en juin 1781 et y revient en sept. 1784, après son remariage avec la veuve de l'imprimeur William Parker, propriétaire du "General Advertiser". Condamné en 1789 comme auteur de libelles diffamatoires, il s'exile en France. Emprisonné après son retour à Londres (1792-1793), il quitte la capitale pour se retirer définitivement à la campagne (Boxmoor, Hertfordshire). Décédé à Liverpool en déc. 1805
