1774-1775 kaufte Carl Wilhelm Ettinger Johann Christian Dieterich das Gothaer Geschäft ab und gründete die Ettingerische Buchhandlung; 1778-1785 "Handlungssocietät" von Justus Perthes und Johann Friedrich Dürfeldt; seine Witwe Karoline Ettinger führte den Verlag zusammen mit ihrem Sohn weiter; Zusammenarbeit mit dem Basler Verleger Johann Jakob Thurneysen, mit dem zusammen Ettinger eine Nachdruckausgabe der 1784-1789 in Kehl bei der Société Littéraire-Typographique erschienenen Ausgabe der Oeuvres completes von Voltaire herausgab
