He was born on 14 January 1807; educated at Edinburgh High School and Edinburgh University. He learnt the trade with his father, and afterwards for a year with Mr Curry of Dublin. In 1831 he went into partnership with his father. He married, in 1841, Martha, only daughter of James Marshall, merchant of Glasgow, but they had no children. After the death of his father in 1842, and of his younger brother, Walter, who had also entered the business, in 1846, he remained sole partner in the business until about 1858. At that point his own ill-health caused him to take two partners [perhaps Robert Anderson and J.S. Ferrier]. He was interested in science, and was Secretary and Treasurer at different times of The Royal Physical Society. He also was a Justice of the Peace for the City of Edinburgh.' heading: - part: - entry: Oliphant - firstname: William - addition: publisher - addition: Edinburgh usedBy: - NLS-SBTI location: point: {} place: - id: cnl00026636 part: - name: Edinburgh typeOfPlace: actv - end: 1835 id: cnl00026636 part: - name: Edinburgh - address: 7 South Bridge start: 1833 typeOfPlace: actv - end: 1860 id: cnl00026636 part: - name: Edinburgh - address: '*7 South Bridge' start: 1847 typeOfPlace: actv related: - end: 1832 note: - lang: eng text: '22 South Bridge, **Edinburgh' part: - entry: William Oliphant start: 1818 tmp: sbti:confirm related typeOfEntity: cni typeOfRelationship: ex:hasRelatedEntity - end: 1846 note: - lang: eng text: '*7 South Bridge, **Edinburgh' part: - entry: William Oliphant & Son start: 1836 tmp: sbti:add record link typeOfEntity: cni typeOfRelationship: ex:hasRelatedEntity typeOfEntry: 0 meta: history: - timestamp: 2014-03-14T12:00:00Z remark: - 'SBTI original entry: OLIPHANT, WilliamEdinburgh' - 'Warning: the SBTI information was converted from unstructured format by automation.
