Son of the Rev. Hugh M'Diarmid, Minister of The Highland Church in Glasgow, born probably in 1790. Started business as clerk in an Edinburgh counting-house connected to a bleach-field at Roslin. He then joined the head office of The Commercial Bank. In January 1817, M'Diarmid left Edinburgh to edit “The Dumfries and Galloway Courier”. In 1817 he published an edition of Cowper. He married Anne M'Knight in 1819. In 1820 the first volume of “The Scrap Book” appeared. In 1823 he published Goldsmith's “Vicar of Wakefield”. In 1825 he started “The Dumfries Magazine, and in 1830 printed and published Sketches from Nature”. In 1832 appeared “Picture of Dumfries”. In 1843, he admitted his eldest son, William Ritchie M'Diarmid to partnership in the paper. He died 18 November 1847.
