En 1569, certains de ses livres sont brûlés ou confisqués, et il demande à habiter Strasbourg. Revient à Paris qu'il quitte définitivement en 1572 après avoir échappé de peu au massacre de la Saint-Barthélemy. S'installe à Francfort dont il devient bourgeois en déc. 1572.
