General Note

Imprimeur-libraire; imprimeur de l'université de Cambridge (1758-1768); graveur et fondeur de caractères. Originaire de Wolverley (Worcestershire). D'abord maître d'écriture et graveur lapidaire à Birmingham à partir de 1726 environ. À partir de 1740, il devient vernisseur après avoir mis au point une nouvelle technique de laquage. À partir de 1750, il s'exerce à la fonderie de caractères et crée le caractère "Baskerville". Apporte diverses innovations techniques, invente le papier vélin (sans pontuseaux) et crée sa propre encre. Imprime son premier livre en 1757 et grave des caractères grecs pour l'université d'Oxford en 1758. À sa mort, sa veuve imprime jusqu'en avril 1775 et garde la fonderie jusqu'en fév. 1777. Pierre-Augustin Caron de Beaumarchais rachète son imprimerie en 1779. Également auteur d'une préface pour le "Paradise lost" de John Milton qu'il imprime en 1759. Matière nom commun associée: Caractères Baskerville.
