Originaire de Valenciennes, fils d'un riche négociant de la ville passé au protestantisme et exécuté le 18 janv. 1567 pour avoir participé au soulèvement d'août 1566 et à la destruction des images. Reçu bourgeois de Francfort en août 1561, puis à nouveau en août 1564, à la suite d'un séjour de 2 ans à Worms. Exerce comme relieur avant 1562. Se retire et revend son imprimerie en 1598 mais continue à publier et à exercer la librairie jusqu'en 1601. Son fils unique Johann Basse lui succède, en association avec son beau-frère Johann Treudel, libraire, et les autres héritiers. - Entre 1562 et 1576, travaille souvent en association avec le libraire et graveur Sigmund Feyerabend."
