Accusé d'avoir imprimé une poésie injurieuse pour le conseil de Lucerne, il est exilé peu après son retour. Établit la première imprimerie de Soleure en sept. 1565, avant de se fixer définitivement à Bâle (sept. 1566). À Berne, travaille en association avec son frère Siegfried."

Die Buchbinderei führte sein Bruder Siegfried weiter. 1559 wurde er für 4 Jahre aus Bern verbannt, womöglich hat er 1563 schon in Basel gedruckt. 1563 ging er zurück nach Bern, wurde aber 1564 erneut für 10 Jahre aus Bern verbannt und ging nach Solothurn. - 1566 ging er von dort nach Basel, wo er bis 1590 druckte. Seine Offizin ging durch die Heirat seiner Witwe auf Johann Schröter über.'
