General Note

Imprimeur du Roi à Londres et à Édimbourg; imprimeur de l'université d'Oxford.
(d.1742) The English printer and monopolist. Nothing is known of his antecedents. He is first heard of purchasing the patent of King's Printer for Bible printing from the executors of Thomas Newcombe in 1709. In 1711 Baskett acquired a third part of the patent as King's Printer in Scotland with Robert Freebairn and James Watson. In 1716 he joined with the Heirs of A. Anderson in obtaining a fresh patent. This patent was disputed by John Watson. He did nothing further until 1725 except to prosecute Henry Parsons, an English bookseller, in 1718, for selling Scottish Bibles in England. In 1725 he set up a printing-house in Edinburgh where he printed Bibles until 1729. He died on 22 June 1742, leaving three sons, Thomas, Robert and John.
