      text: "Imprimeur-libraire. - Fils de l'imprimeur-libraire de Strasbourg Wendelin I Rihel, à qui il succède à sa mort en mars 1555, d'abord en association avec son frère Josias I Rihel. En 1557, à cause d'une brouille, se sépare de ce dernier et exerce à son compte. Publie surtout des classiques pour l'usage scolaire et des ouvrages religieux, dont certains en anglais ; l'un d'entre eux, la \"Supplicacyo of the Quenes Maiestie\", de 1555, portant la fausse adresse : \"Imprint of J. Cawoode\". Fréquente les foires de Francfort, où il possède un dépôt de livres. En 1567, partage une édition du Nouveau Testament avec son beau-frère Samuel Emmel ; celui-ci étant en faillite à son décès, Theodosius Rihel est en procès avec ses créanciers et, en 1571, rachète son atelier. Plusieurs fois accusé d'avoir contrevenu à un privilège de librairie. Emprisonné en 1575 pour impression d'un ouvrage portant outrage à l'empereur Maximilien II, qui le gracie tout en ordonnant l'expurgation du livre incriminé. Plusieurs de ses publications à caractère confessionnel font l'objet de confiscations. En 1590, demande l'autorisation d'imprimer une bible en polonais. En 1605, pour raison de santé, confie la direction de son officine à Hilarius Meyer, fils d'un notaire. Mort avant le 27 juin 1608, date de son inventaire après décès. Son fils Theodosius (II) Rihel, qui avait travaillé avec lui et s'était plaint d'avoir été mal payé et de ne pas avoir reçu de leçons de français, lui succède et continue à publier sous le nom de son père, avant de vendre vers 1620 son matériel typographique au graveur Christoph von der Heyden"
