À 15 ans apprenti à Vienne chez Samuel Müller, où il reste jusqu'en 1739, bien que quittancé en 1735. Travaille chez Johann Peter Van Ghelen puis rachète l'imprimerie de Johann Jakob Jahn en 1748. Obtient la faveur de Marie-Thérèse, impératrice d'Autriche, dès 1750. Ouvre de nouvelles imprimeries et librairies dans diverses villes de l'Empire et à l'étranger, notamment des imprimeries à Graz, Innsbruck, Linz, Varsovie, Prague, Pest, Brno, Trieste, Varazsd (aujourd'hui Varaždin, Croatie) et Zagreb (Agram). Possède, à partir de 1752, une fonderie de caractères, puis deux papeteries, des ateliers de gravure et de reliure. Tient 18 succursales. Anobli en mai 1764, chevalier du Saint Empire ; anobli en Hongrie en 1790. Publie de nombreuses contrefaçons. Mátyás Trattner, son parent, lui succède à Pest de 1789 à 1813, puis János Tamás (Johann Thomas) II Trattner de 1813 à 1825, et après la mort de celui-ci, de nouveau Mátyás jusqu'en 1828
