General Note

Ignatius Meurer was born in Thuringia 1589 (SBL has 1586, but this is obviously a misprint). He was trained as printer in Greifswald and worked in Rostock before coming to Stockholm in 1609, where he first worked in the printing house of Andreas Gutterwitz and later as foreman in the printing house of Anund Olofsson Helsing’s widow, Christina Mårtensdotter Klinck. In 1613 he married the widow and became the owner of the printing house. Already in 1614 he acquired some kind of royal privilege, but he did not use the appellation until in 1664. He developed the business to a great extent, and besides being a printer he was an important publisher. He printed the first Swedish newspaper, in 1645. He had his own typefoundry but there is no evidence that he sold types to other printers. He ran the printing house until his death in 1672, when it was taken over by J.G. Eberdt.
