De 1766 à 1777, associé à son ancien patron William Bowyer, auquel il succède ; à partir de 1800, s'associe son fils John Bowyer Nichols, le plus souvent sous la raison "John Nichols and son" jusqu'en 1823

Imprimeur ; imprimeur de la Société des antiquaires. - Éditeur du "Gentleman's Magazine" où il est aussi rédacteur. Auteur d'éditions critiques, de mélanges historiques et littéraires et de compilations. N'exerce plus qu'occasionnellement après 1803. Maître de la "Stationers' Company" (1804). Imprimerie et dépôt détruits par des incendies en mai 1786 et en fév. 1808. Se retire définitivement vers 1823
