Successor to Jacob Tonson I and II. His father (Tonson II) died before his great uncle (Tonson I), so this Tonson took over the shop after Tonson I's death. He often worked in partnership with his brother, Richard Tonson II. This Jacob Tonson is often known as Jacob Tonson the Younger.
