L'abbaye Saint-Julien fut consacrée en 575 par Grégoire de Tours. Elle eut un grand rayonnement au X et XIe siècles et possèdait de nombreux prieurés et domaines. Mais dès le XVe siècle, elle perdit son prestige. En 1637, les moines se retrouvèrent sous l'obédience de la Congrégation de Saint-Maur.
