La première communauté fut fondée à Lyon en 1625 par Jeanne Chézard de Matel (1596-1670). Les monastères, longtemps autonomes, furent réunis en congrégation de droit pontifical en 1949. Apostolat : enseignement, sauf en France depuis 1903
Ne pas confondre avec 8 congrégations du même nom fondées issues de la fondation lyonnaise, mais aujourd'hui totalement autonomes : Sœurs du Verbe Incarné au Mexique, Guadalaraja (1903) et Mexico (1929). Aux États-Unis : Cleveland (1927), Corpus Christi (1871), Houston (1873), Victoria (1866). Et Sœurs de Charité du Verbe Incarné aux États-Unis : Houston (1866) et San Antonio (1873)
