      text: "Fondée en 1624 par des marchands dieppois et rouennais sous le nom de Compagnie du Sénégal et de Gambie. En 1634, elle devint la Compagnie du Cap vert et obtint le monopole de la traite. Saint Louis du Sénégal fut fondé en 1659, puis les Français s'établirent aussi à Gorée. En 1664, ces postes furent cédés à la Compagnie des Indes occidentales, créée par Colbert, puis aux diverses compagnies du Sénégal formées par la suite, enfin à la Compagnie de l'Inde orientale"
