General NoteJohn Bradfute was the son of John Bradfute, Minister of Dunsyre and Margaret Bell sister of his partner John Bell, and was born 14 November 1763. John Bradfute, bookseller and stationer, Burgess and Guild Brother as apprentice to John Bell bookseller 10 September 1793. John Bell died 22 September 1806. “Scots Magazine”. Apprentices: William Blackwood, Burgess 5 March 1803; Samuel Aitken, Burgess 11 March 1811. Thirteen of the firm's ledgers for the period 1788-1818 were discovered, in 1996, in the remains of Allan's Close under City Chambers. They are now in Edinburgh City Archives Accession 352. Correspondence and other papers of the firm from 1771 to 1854 is on deposit in the National Library of Scotland Dep.317. 'The only house during my apprenticeship [1799-1804] that kept their accounts with accuracy was that of Bell and Bradfute, and they were looked upon by the others as disagreeable strict precisionists' Adam Black. “Memoirs”, edited by Alexander Nicolson. Edinburgh, 1885 p.20. The National Library of Scotland has Bell and Bradfute's Catalogues of Civil Law 1793, Science for 1793 and a General Catalogue for 1794.
