General Note"When an inventory of the books in Glasgow Cathedral was made in 1432 one volume was in the hands of Domini Richardi air ad ligandum (“Registrum Episcopatus Glasguensis”, Vol.2, 335). There is some doubt as to the correct form of the surname, as in the Maitland Club copy of the “Inventory” (Glasgow, 1831) it appears as "Ay [Hay?]" and in a transcript in Glasgow University Library as "An". However as the form Air seems reasonable and has already appeared in print J.H. Stevenson 'The Fifteenth Century Scots Binding of the Haye Manuscript.' “Publications of the Edinburgh Bibliographical Society”, Vol.6, 1901-4, pp.77-82, I retain it here."
