General NoteGeorge Aikman (1787 or 1788-1865) was employed by W. H. Lizars before starting his own business in 1823. He married Alison Mackay; and died 16 October 1865 and is buried in St Cuthbert's Burial Ground, Edinburgh; says 2 Ingliston Street. Their son also George (1830-1905) born 20 May 1830 was educated at the High School, and afterwards apprenticed to his father, and after a journeyman period spent in Manchester and London became a partner in the business. While an apprentice he had attended the Trustee Academy, and as early as 1850 was exhibiting at the Royal Scots Academy. He married Elizabeth Barnett 2 December 1859. In 1876 he gave up business for painting. He was elected an ARSA in 1880. He died in Edinburgh 8 January 1905.
