A large part of the books were sold or stolen, despite some being hidden by Mazarine's librarian Naudé. Some of the sold and stolen books eventually returned to the Mazarine Library. The library was one of the few public libraries in Europe (together with the Bodleian, the Ambrosiana and the Angelica), open to scholars on Thursdays.

Activity
Start (year)1791
NoteThe French Revolution brought no harm to the Bibliothèque mazarine. In fact, it substantially contributed to its growth, becoming the repository of the collections of many suppressed religious institutions in Paris and in Île-de-France, including Saint-Germain-des-Prés, Saint-Victor, Minims of place Royale, or Passy, and Vincennes, Oratorians, Celestines, Carmelites of place Maubert, Augustinians, etc. Abbot Gaspard Michel Leblond (1738-1809), librarian from 1791, was a member of the commission in charge of the inventoring and preservation of the artistic patrimony of the state. The Mazarine acquired more than 4,000 manuscripts and 50,000 printed books, among which many incunabula.
