Owner Id4677
TypePerson
GenderMale
Biographical dates - Period of existence1540-1607
Other InformationHis death date has been given as 1597 in some 19th-century sources; however, later research has shown clearly that he died on 23 March 1607 in Grabštejn (Grafenstein), and is buried in Grottau. He is recorded as accompanying Kepler to the court of his patron Rudolf II. in 1600, and executing a deed in 1606; Aegidius Sadeler's series of engravings, "Menses XII. anni solaris" was dedicated to him in 1607. The name of his barony is variously written as "Grünbühl", "Gruenpüchel", or "Grünenpühel", and "Streuchau" or "Streychau". On his large bookplate, engraved by Lucas Kilian after Matthäus Gundelach, his surname is spelled "Hoffman". See Klaus Eckart Ehrlicher, "Ein steirisches Adelsgeschlecht in Böhmen und Mähren: Hoffmann Freiherren zu Gruenpüchel und Strechau", Bohemia 21 (1980), 59-83. [Record created by John Lancaster.]
