Altre informazioni"In 1676 he undertook a three-year tour of France and Italy. [...] Pembroke had a reputation as a patron of the arts and sciences, a collector, and a virtuoso. Gilbert Burnet described him as a man 'of great and profound learning, particularly in the mathematics' (Burnet, 4.361). He was elected FRS on 13 May 1685, admitted on 26 January 1687, and served as president of the society in 1689–90: initially a fairly active member, he attended not a single meeting during his presidency. He patronized Locke, who dedicated the Essay Concerning Human Understanding to him. He purchased most of the collection at Wilton, including the Arundel marbles" [ODNB].
Several members of the family [i.e. Earls of Pembroke] added to their Library and they were benefactors to the Bodleian. Oliver Cromwell bought manuscripts from the 3rd Earl and the collection was rich in incunabula when finally sold between 1914-20.
