Other InformationChancellor of the diocese of Peterborough. FRS, FSA. Born in Wales, he graduated at Oxford (Wadham College; B.A. 1744; M.A. 1746). Anglican priest and bibliophile, between 1750 and 1770 ca. he travelled a lot, in Europe and Middle East, where he acquired books and other antiquities. In 1770 he came back to England as Chaplain of the Duke of Leeds; he joined a literary association and in 1776 became a member of the Royal Society. He mainly collected Italian books; his library was sold in London in 1783, two years after his death. He used to mark his books with the monogram T.C.E. [see the auction catalogue of his library: 'Bibliotheca Croftsiana, a catalogue of the curious and distinguished library of the late Rev. and learned Thomas Crofts, A. M. Chancellor of the Diocese of Peterborough and fellow of the Royal and Antiquary Societies deceased, which will be sold by auction by Mr Paterson', London 1783].
