Altre informazioniBritish Consul in Venice (1744-1760). Uncertain date of birth, 1673 or 1674, based on the fact that when he died, in Venice, he was said to be ninety-six. Also recorded as 1682-1770. Patron and merchant, he was the point of reference for the English community in Venice. Smith published three catalogues of his incunabula: in 1724 (see Morrison, p. 32); in 1737 and the most famous Bibliotheca Smithiana in 1755. Although not conceived as a sale catalogue, 'it turned out to be just that'. A copy of the Bibliotheca Smithiana 1755 was used by the librarians of king George III for the purchase of Smith's collection in 1762-63 (two copies preserved at the British Library bear the subscription of Richard Dalton, dated 28 January 1763). After Smith's death four other catalogues of his collection were printed: Venezia 1771 (where 118 incunabula appear); a 'Bibliotheca Smithiana' as auction catalogue in two parts, both printed in London in 1773, the second volume presented as Bibliotheca Smithiana Pars altera. The document with inventory of all Smith possessions was finally published in 1988 (pp. 515-550 of the 'Capricci Veneziani del Settecento', catalogue of the exhibition ed. by D. Succi, Torino: Allemandi). In 1727 the incunabula were 218, in 1737 246 and in 1755 they were 260. All of them were sold in 1762, when he re-started purchasing incunabula, included copies of editions he had once owned. The final collection of Smith's incunabula contain 118 copies. Smith had many of his books rebound in white vellum with gold tooling [arms]. Smith he used a coat of arms of the family of Smith of Essex and Suffolk but he never established his right to it: (Crest) A cubit arm erect couped vested checky vert and or holding three arrows; (Arms) Argent on each of two chevrons sable three fleurs de lys argent on a chief azure a lion passant argent (https://armorial.library.utoronto.ca/stamps/SMI004_s1, also in bookplate).
