Biographical dates - Period of existence1757 - 1817
Other InformationClassical scholar, whose Library, rich in Greek and Latin authors, was bought by the British Museum after his death (BL Clark's slips).
See: ODNB; http://burneycentre.mcgill.ca/bio_charlesjr.html.
After Burney's death a commission of the House of Commons recommended the purchase of his library for the sum of about £13,500 and estimated that £3,000-£4,000 could be recouped by selling the duplicates. The collection entered the British Museum in June 1818; the following year a sale of duplicates was held and about 4000-5000 volumes were sold (P.R. Harris, in Libraries within the Library 2009, p. 401).
Bookplate: simple and elegant, made of his name, in italics, within an oval, a ribbon of leaves drapped over the oval. It is found only on some copies (a minority); often Burney's copies have also simple binding, plain or with simple fillet. His notes, in italics, can be very distinctive and sometimes paratextual material (lists of authors, table of concordances) is found written by him in the flyleaves.
Burney's Greek incunabula are described by him in a separate catalogue, dated 1799 (BL Kings MS 385); Latin incunabula are found in a general catalogue of Latin books (partly in Burney's hand: Add MS 60101-601014).
Burney's copies which are today in the British Library can also be identified by the stamp, although it was not made for the purpose. Like all books purchased they were stamped in red, and this was the stamp in use at the time: Octagonal, script in Latin 'MVSEVM BRITANNICVM' (type {1h}, in P.R. Harris, in Libraries within the Library, p. 419).
