Samuel Charles Smith (usually styling himself C. Smith) was one of the most competent, if generally rather pedestrian, binders of the early nineteenth century. He was born about 1790, [...] and became free from his apprenticeship in 1813. [...] Later directories list a Charles Smith between 1828-1840, who may be the same binder.
