Hermann Gilhofer (already established as a dealer in drawings and prints in 1883) and Heinrich Ranschburg became partners in 1884. Gilhofer retired in 1897. Wilhelm (William) Schab joined the firm in 1905. Ranschburg died in 1914; his son Otto, together with his widow, his daughter, and Schab, continued the business. (E. P. Goldschmidt was briefly also associated with the firm.) In 1924 Schab opened a branch of the firm in Lucerne. Both branches ceased business with the annexation of Austria by Germany in 1938; the Viennese branch was "Arianized" and although it continued to use the name of the firm, it was a different company. The Lucerne branch was revived in 1956 and continues to the present. The Vienna firm was revived in 1947, under restitution claims by Schab and the heirs of Ranschburg, and became Gilhofer KG, from 1958 under the direction of Rudolf Hoffmann. In 2004, the firm was taken over by Inlibris, a firm founded by Hugo Wetscherek, and continues as Inlibris Gilhofer Nfg. [J.Lancaster]
