In 1582 Podiani made an agreement with the city government according to which his library would be the public city library. Disagreement between Podiani and the city rulers made him change his mind but the local government was eventually able to take possession of the library after his death (1615). The Biblioteca Augusta was therefore officially opened only in 1623 (G.
