The collection was offered as lot 250 in the Sotheby sale catalogue of Waterton's library, 18 January 1895 (London: Sotheby, Wilkinson & Hodge); purchased by Henry Sotheran, who offered first choice to the British Museum, and sold the remainder to Walter Copinger. Waterton also formed a collection of rings, now at the Victorian and Albert Museum [DNB (under the entry for his father, the naturalist Charles (1782-1865); Bod-inc Index of provenances; BL Clark's slips].
