Stewart, he entered business for himself in 1860; in partnership with G. M. Green, 1871-1872. He then entered partnership with David White, doing business as Ellis and White (q.v.), 1872-1884. Retired from business in 1885; sale on 16 November 1885, "Catalogue of the Very Choice Collection of Rare Books ... Formed by Mr. Ellis ...", Sotheby, Wilkinson and Hodge, London.
