weitere InformationCollecting books and antiquities was Tyssen-Amherst's chief interest; his library was rich in ecclesiastical history, especially of the Reformation and the Church of England, and in editions of the English Bible. Equally strong was his interest in the history of the spread of printing, and historic bookbindings. He bought steadily from the 1860s (regularly through Bernard Quaritch). His library included seventeen Caxtons, and his early printed books illustrated the spread of typography in practically every European country. He was a member of the Roxburghe Club. An abbreviated catalogue was prepared by Seymour de Ricci: A Hand-list of a Collection of Books and Manuscripts Belonging to ... Lord Amherst, Cambridge, 1906; it was intended to be a catalogue raisonné; the larger plan was scuttled by financial hardship, which also led to two sales at Sotheby's (3 December 1908 and 24 March 1909); later sales were also held on 12 December 1911, and on 17 January and 14 November 1921. Armorial bookplate without his name, with motto "Victoria concordia crescit". [John Lancaster; chiefly from Oxford DNB]
