weitere InformationKing of Etruria 1803-07, Duke of Lucca 1824-47, Duke of Parma 1847-49, Count of Villafranca 1849-83.

In 1848, upon re-obtaining to his family the Duchy of Parma, he transferred there the collection that he had created in Lucca in the previous decades, and that in 1837 he had opened to the public. In 1865 the newly created Italian State decided to acquire the collection, which has since formed the Fondo Palatino of the Biblioteca Parmense, and has in fact also given the name to the Library in Parma, now called Biblioteca Palatina.

Abdicating in 1849 in favour of his son Charles III, he retired to his castle of Weistropp, Saxony, where he continued his bibliophile interests and the liturgical collection grew with the additions of several books available on the market after the suppression of monasteries and convents. [...] He moved his library from Saxony to Paris during the Second Empire, then in 1870 to Nice and in 1883 to Schwarzau am Steinfeld in Austria. The library was left to his grandson and heir Robert (Florence 1848 –Viareggio 1907) Duke of Parma 1854-1859, who continued the collection and had it described by Bohatta, see his entry for further information (Dondi, Printed Books of Hours, no. 13e).

AnmerkungThis second collection was created by Carlo di Borbone-Parma after his abdication of Parma in favour of his son. This second collection, in particular, moved substantially: first in Weistropp, Saxony, where Carlo continued his bibliophile interests. During the Second Empire he moved it from Saxony to Paris, then in 1870 to Nice and in 1883 to Schwarzau am Steinfeld, Austria. It was eventually inherited by Roberto I di Borbone-Parma and later sold at auction.
