Other InformationRobert (Florence 1848 –? 1907) Duke of Parma 1854-1859, Charles-Louis's grandson, heir and continuator of the collection had a new description made by Hanns Bohatta, conservator of the University library of Vienna, published in 1909: BOHATTA, Parma, printed in 200 exemplars. At the death of Duke Robert the collection was broken up as part of the succession, hence the sale, in Paris in 1932, Livres de liturgie imprimés aux XVe et XVIe siècles faisant partie de la bibliothèque de Son Altesse Royale le duc Robert de Parme, Paris, 30 May - 1 June 1932, with preface by Seymour de Ricci; see also LAURA ZUMKELLER, La biblioteca liturgica dei duchi di Parma, in La Braidense. La cultura del libro e delle biblioteche nella società dell’immagine, Florence, Artificio stampa, 1991, pp. 122-129.
After the 1932 sale some 2,000 volumes (including 77 manuscripts, 81 incunables, and later editions) were brought back from Paris by Hoepli in 1933, put on show in Rome and Milan (La biblioteca liturgica dei duchi di Parma, Milan and Rome, Libreria Antiquaria Hoepli, April-May 1934; Cento libri famosi che non siamo riusciti a vendere, Libreria antiquaria Ulrico Hoepli, Milan, vendita all'asta 5-6 giugno 1935); see GIOVANNI GALBIATI, Fascino d’una Biblioteca ducale, Milan, Hoepli, 1935, and eventually sold at auction by Hoepli in Milan in 1936.
The industrialist Count Paolo Gerli (Lyons 1888 – Bellagio 1965; not in DBI) purchased it en bloc in 1936 and donated it to the nation; the collection entered Brera in 1938; see GIUSEPPE BARETTA, Tra i fondi della Biblioteca Braidense, Milan, Franco Sciardelli, 1993, pp. 119-121.
