Altre informazioniA library for the University was only founded at the beginning of the 19th century, the public library (the Biblioteca Augusta) having been founded already towards the end of 16th century (by Prospero Podiani, q.v.) with the purpose to provide scholars and students with a major tool of research. The University library was founded during the revolutionary period occurred between 18th and 19th century; the starting collections were made of the library of the monastery of Santa Maria of Montemorcino, the religious house being suppressed and the building given to the University. A number of collections entered the library over the years, thanks also to private donations (from teachers ans scholars) and the acquisitions of portions of the libraries of the religious houses suppressed after the unification of the country.
