Other InformationBorn in Florence in 1803, in 1823 he became Professor of Mathematics in Pisa. In 1833 he fled to France for political reasons, where he was later appointed Inspector General of French Libraries (1841-48). Both in Italy and in France he stole huge quantities of books. In 1848, on the point of being arrested, he fled to London, where he stayed until 1868, selling his books. In 1868, ill, he returned to Italy, where he died (in Fiesole) in 1869.
