AnmerkungIn 1755 the future King employed Richard Dalton (c. 1715-91) as his librarian. When he came to the throne (1760) there was no royal library, as George II had presented the Royal library to the British Museum. Under the influence of Bute (George Stuart, 3rd Earl of Bute) George III started a collection of coins, medals, gems, prints, drawings and paintings and books. Bute's greatest contribution to the enrichement of the royal collections was his involvement with the purchase of Consul Smith's collection in 1762. The material purchased included works of art, the books however formed the basis of the King's Library which passed to the British Museum in 1820. The contents of the collection were listed in the Bibliotheca Smithiana 1755; the British Library owns the copies used for the purchase, subscribed by Richard Dalton and dated Venice 28 January 1763 (the King's copy is shelfmarked 823.h.26): 6,000 titles, 260 of which were incunabula. For a while the king's librarians were absorbed in the treatment of this collection; further expenditure on books started in 1766; likely books were acquired from other royal residencies. In 1774 Frederick Augusta Barnard succeeded Dalton as librarian; he was often sent in Europe to acquire material for the library (but purchases were also made in England). By 1820 Barnard had built up a collection of 65,000 volumes; it was a working library, yet full of treasures, conceived to meet the needs of scholars. The library was accommodated in the Queen's House (later Buckingham Palace) bought by the King in 1762. By 1770 a bindery was set up in the Queens' House, to have all the books in good order.

AnmerkungGeorge III died in January 1820. Despite his will, in 1823 George IV offered the Royal Library to the nation and the Treasury asked the Trustees of the British Museum for advice. They recommended to place the Library under the care of the British Museum (and a new establishment of officers), kept separate from other collections and within a new building. By 1827 the east wing of the British Museum was built and a gallery to accommodate the King's Library was realized in there. In six weeks the 65,000 volumes of the King's Library were brought from Kensington Palace (where they had been moved in 1825 from Buckingham Palace that George IV wanted to reshape) to the British Museum and rearranged on the shelves of the gallery. The library was stamped only in 1842-44: three stamps, of different size, with the symbols of the British Museum and the reference to the king on the upper margin (P.R. Harris, in 'Libraries within the Library, 2009, p. 421).
