weitere InformationThe collection was begun by the 2nd Duke of Devonshire (1672-1729) but its chief contributor was William Cavendish, 6th Duke (1790-1858). He succeeded to the dukedom in 1812 and from then on bought at the finest library sales (Roxburghe sale), acquiring rare and notable books, such as the collection of editiones principes and incunabula formed by Thomas Dampier (1748-1812). Caxtons (and the plays) were sold in 1914 and bought for the Huntington Library U.S.A. [Armorial bookplate, motto 'Cavendo tutus.] (Bl Clark's slips; Seymour de Ricci; Catalogue of the Library at Chatsworth, London 1879). A number of books were sold to the British Museum in 1958 (G.D. Painter, 'Chatsworth books in the British Museum', The Book Collector 7 (1958) pp.241-252).
