    [from Catherine Yu:] LIAO, Jenn-wang. “An Attempt of Investigating the Four Incunabula in the Tanaka Collection of Taiwan University Library.” University Library Journal, vol. 7, no. 2, Sep. 2003, pp. 60–99: Based on research  on the correspondence of TANAKA Tyôzaburô in 2000 and 2002 by KAWASHIMA Akio, a professor at Kyoto University (who provided evidence of the bookseller's bills and receipts to the author of the article), LIAO says that TANAKA knew about the sale of the Penzig collection in 1921 through G. E. Stechert, an antique bookseller in New York while TANAKA was working in the USA. He purchased the collection with USD5000 from his father's inheritance through the bookseller to bid in a European auction.
    In 1929, TANAKA transported his private collection to Taipei when he became the professor and first director of NTUL. In 1944, TANAKA left Taiwan for an assignment in the Japanese Navy. In 1945, after WWII, his wife was forced to leave Taiwan because Japan lost the war and had to return Taiwan to China. The private collection was left in Taipei. In 1947, the collection was confiscated by the government. In 1958, TANAKA aged 73, came to Taipei for his manuscripts and collection. He was refused to regain the collection. In the end, Tanaka agreed the collection remains in NTU, named the Tanaka Collection.

(ISBN: 986-7602-00-5): p.38 mentions that Kobe Bank, founded by Tanaka Tyozaburo's father, paid USD 100,000 for the books in the Tanaka collection.
