The armorial shows, on the dexter side, the arms used by Benjamin Nicholson of Bramley, Surrey, in the late 16th century, and on the sinister side the arms of Caryll and an unidentified owner quartered with the arms of Reade and Alphew (a Margaret Alphew married James Reade, or Rede, in 1519). Benjamin's son Robert married a Martha Caryll (cf. See Thomasin Elizabeth Sharpe, A royal descent ... (London, 1875) pp.80-81; Harleian Society's Visitations of Surrey 1530, 1572 and 1623; Robert Boumphrey, Surrey coats of arms (unpublished typescript at https://www.surreycc.gov.uk/culture-and-leisure/history-centre/researchers/guides/coats-of-arms)).
