NoteThe Library was founded in 1792 as an annex to the Great School of Chios. Its core collection was created by books donated by Adamantios Koraes and other scholars. A large building was founded in 1817 in order to host the increasing number of books, but was destroyed by the Ottoman forces in 1822 during the Greek War of Independence. The Library's collection was created again thanks to Koraes's contribution, who bequeathed his personal library after his death in 1833. Other donors contributed also. The library was hosted in a new building in 1870. This building was destroyed by an earthquake in 1881 but the collection survived and was brought to its current venue. Built in 1885, with some later additions, it hosts the collection to this day.
