Other InformationThe library was created as a result of years of efforts by a group of Warsaw educational activists and intellectuals. In June 1914, thanks to a donation from Eugenia Kierbedziowa, it received its own building at 26 Koszykowa Street. In January 1945, the Germans retreating from Warsaw set fire to the Library building, more than 300,000 volumes were destroyed and more than 100,000 were taken away. After the war about 49,000 volumes found in Pruszkow, Legnica, Cracow and Czech Prague were recovered in the way of revindication. Today the library keeps ca. 15,000 volumes of early printed books (among them 83 incunabula) and about 4,000 manuscripts. Incunabula came to the library mainly from donations by members of the Public Library Society.
