Other InformationThe John Crerar Library was a free, public research library devoted to works of science and technology. It was incorporated in 1894 and began planning and building its collection without a physical location. From 1987 to 1920, The John Crerar Library was housed on the sixth and later fifth floors of the Marshall Field & Co. building (111 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois). From 1920 to 1963, The John Crerar Library was housed in a dedicated library building at the corner of Michigan Avenue and Randolph Street, Chicago, Illinois. After signing a long term cooperative library program agreement in June 1961 with the Illinois Institute of Technology, the John Crerar Library was moved to 35 West 33rd Street, Chicago, Illinois. In 1981, the decision was reached to join with the University of Chicago. The new John Crerar Library at the University of Chicago opened on Monday, September 10, 1984, with the Crerar collection's rare volumes held in the University of Chicago's Special Collections.
