weitere InformationZosimas Esphigmenitis was a learned monk of the Monastery of Esphigmenou, in Mount Athos. Born in the Pelion area, he later left the monastery and returned to his homeland while remaining a monk.
He was interested in the history of the area of Thessaly and wrote extensively about it. He fought against ignorance and tried to educate and free people from prejudices and superstitions. For that purpose, he founded the first bookstore of Volos in 1879. In 1900 he created a lending library, making his large library of manuscripts and rare printed books available to the public for free.
He bequeathed his library of 2.850 volumes to the Municipality of Volos (then Pagassai), which in 1908 granted it to the Association "Treis Ierarchai".
