Educated in Jesuit and Piarist colleges, studied in Rome and Paris, obtained the degree of doctor of both laws at Cracow Academy. From 1758 bishop of Kiev. Firstly collected books on his own, then integrated his collection with the collection of his brother, Andrzej Stanisław Kostka in 1747 and opened the public library (about 200 000 vol.) In 1761 he entrusted the library to Jesuits, and in 1774 it was taken over by the state. Załuski Library became one of the biggest public libraries in Europe (about 400 000 vol.). In 1794-1795 Empress Catherine II ordered the removal of the library to st. Petersburg (Catalogue of Incunabula in the National Library of Poland - vol. II).
