Altre informazioniPieter Fontein was a Mennonite minister/teacher and bibliophile. He studied to become a Mennonite teacher in Leiden and Amsterdam, became a minister in Rotterdam in 1732 and in Amsterdam (Lamist Mennonite Church) in 1739. From his emirate in 1748 until his death he focused on the study of of the classics, and in particular on a text-critical edition of the Characters by the Greek philosopher Theophrastus, which never appeared in print. He bequeathed an enormous library (c. 1400 titles, mostly classical literature) to the Lamist Mennonite Church in 1789, of which c. 1200 titles were given on loan (and partly sold later) to the University Library Amsterdam in 1919.
