Other InformationSNL was established in 1941 in Martin as a part of Matica slovenská, the oldest cultural and edifying organisation of Slovaks. It became independent in 2000 thanks to The Library Act of Slovak republic. There are currently more than 5 millions documents in its collections, 300 000 of them are part of the historical ones. The Incunabula collection holds 505 editions in 679 copies (the exact number is higher, there are new additions to the collection, which will be recorded during next years). The vast majority of incunabula comes from the monastery libraries, they got to the SNL after violent dissolving of monasteries by communist regime in 1950. The most of incunabula comes from the libraries of Franciscans, Praemostratensians, Capuchin, Carthusians, etc. For the first time, they were recorded in Kotvan’s bibliography in 1979 (he recorded 427 editions in 586 copies of incunabula from SNL’s collections). Since his times, the collection has grown and incunabula are currently recorded to the online catalogue and are going to be digitized in the next few years.
