Altre informazioniOne of the two largest Polish post-war repositories for cultural goods (the other was at Wawel Castle in Cracow), operating since 1945 to 1958. The antique objects (among them books and manuscripts) were transported mainly from Gdańsk and Jelenia Góra in Lower Silesia, then were placed in various institutions, museums, churches and libraries.
In February 1946, the University of Warsaw Library through the intermediary of the National Museum in Warsaw took over about 12 thousand volumes from Hessen library (including 3798 early printed books). It is still not clear in what way these books ended up in Poland.
