NoteAs the direct successor to Los Angeles’ earliest institution of higher learning, Saint Vincent’s College, Loyola Marymount University can trace its diverse student population back to its 1865 roots. The Loyola Marymount University (LMU) of today was formed by the 1973 merging of two academic institutions, Loyola University founded in 1911, after the Jesuits took over administration of Saint Vincent’s College, and Marymount College founded in 1933. It is a comprehensive university in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education. Located on the west side of Los Angeles overlooking the Pacific Ocean, LMU is one of the United States’ 28 Jesuit colleges and universities and five Marymount institutions. The William H. Hannon Library was opened in 2009 and serves as the intellectual and cultural hub of the university.
