Jodocus Gallus (1459-1517) of Rouffach, Alsace; theologian and humanist at the University of Heidelberg, where he supported his nephew Conradus Pellicanus OFM (Rouffach 1478 – Zurich 1556) in the years 1491-1492; the family surname, Kurscherer, was changed by Jodocus Gallus; Frater Conradus Pellicanus, his nephew, 1504; inscription on front parchment endleaf: «Pro Fratre Conrado pellicano Rubequen. Dono Iodoci Galli Rubeaquen. Auunculi Anno 1504». Pellicanus trained in Hebrew Talmudic and rabbinical studies, producing a vast commentary of the Bible in seven volumes (Zurich 1532-1539); became a priest in 1501 and continued to serve in the Franciscan order in Rouffach, Pforzheim and Basel, where he was a corrector for the Amerbachs, Frobens and other printing firms, but where he also gradually turned to the Protestant faith; he was called to Zurich by Zwingly to be professor of Greek and Hebrew in 1526 and he was instrumental in the expansion of the then Abbey library; see Martin Germann, Die reformierte Stiftsbibliothek am Grossmünster Zürich im 16.
